ITX Uses GitHub Copilot AI To Complete 7-Month Build in Less Than 4 Months

Our client is a non-profit organization committed to helping students plan for future success in post-secondary academics and beyond. Standing in their way was an aging monolith platform struggling with all the fundamental hurdles that hinder organizational progress and efficiency.

An AI-enabled ITX Delivery team jumped in to help revitalize a legacy platform modernization project that had fallen behind its original delivery schedule. Using GitHub Copilot’s AI-assisted IDE (Integrated Development Environment) tool, the ITX Delivery team completed 7 months’ worth of roadmap in fewer than 4 months.

CHALLENGE

A client faced an extensive development delay that threatened a vital revenue stream. They needed their online portal released and ready in time for the annual selling cycle, followed immediately by a busy user-onboarding period.

ACTION

Leveraging GitHub Copilot and AI-assisted development practices, ITX rapidly spun up a new team to analyze legacy code, write user stories, and generate new code to accelerate delivery.

RESULT

The new ITX team completed 3 epics scoped at 14 two-week sprints in just 7.25 sprints. By reducing the time required to complete the new product build from 7 months to 4, ITX  helped the client achieve their objective.

ITX understands our mission, embraced it as their own, and partnered with us to complete our platform modernization project. The solution ITX created helped us meet the needs and expectations of today’s students.

Challenge.

Legacy digital platforms present significant roadblocks for organizations attempting to achieve their business goals. Such was the challenge for an ITX client facing a delay in the platform modernization project – a delay that threatened their business.

Looming over the project was a strict deadline: our client needed their new platform released and ready for users in advance of a key annual selling cycle, followed immediately by a seasonal user onboarding period. With a different group of developers already working on the build, the AI-enabled ITX team had to jump in and create fast progress with minimal disruption.

Action.

ITX has fine-tuned its internal best practices for using GitHub Copilot AI to write code, debug code, perform code review, and refactor code, while also integrating other AI tools in product management.

As soon as ITX spun up the new Delivery team and oriented them to the project, its members applied these tools – specifically, GitHub Copilot AI – to analyze the legacy architecture, the legacy code, and a long list of oncoming epics. Github Copilot AI accelerated our information gathering and helped us answer questions about the architecture, the build, and the go-forward plan; at no point did we have to interrupt the other team already working on the product.

The Result

Our experience with the tool streamlined the team’s application of GitHub Copilot’s AI-assisted IDE, which propelled the team to deliver 7 months’ worth of roadmap in less than 4 months. In that time, we completed three epics – initially scoped at 14 two-week sprints – in just 7.25 sprints.

Specifically, our AI-enabled process helped us:

  • Identify Epics to Own. The Github Copilot AI tool analyzed interdependencies, allowing the ITX team to tackle three epics without disruption and with no drop in quality.
  • Streamline Requirements and User Stories. AI efficiently drafted requirements and user stories, requiring little on-team refinement before client approval.
  • Optimize Code with Refactoring. The AI tool identified and recommended fixes for defective code.
  • Accelerate Code Generation. Human-guided programming with AI significantly compressed timelines, enabling rapid and independent delivery of three epics.
